Manipulating magnetic forces with light

The magnetic forces in materials like iron can be rapidly manipulated with light. This has been demonstrated theoretically by Johan Mentink and Martin Eckstein from the University of Hamburg at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) and the MPI for Structure and Dynamics of Matter in a publication in Physical Review Letters. Rapid and effective manipulation of magnetic states is of immense fundamental and technological value. For example, it could be used for the production of faster hard disks. [more]
