Splicing together a thin film in motion

March 15, 2018
MPSD researcher Dr. Kenneth Beyerlein provides a new approach to imaging thin films on the atomic scale, using an algorithm for image recovery that splices together a sequence of frames in time. The algorithm is showcased in a publication of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) by recovering the response of a Neodymium Nickelate thin film to a disturbance initiated at its interface. Good Vibrations feel the force

February 22, 2018
By measuring the highly unusual atomic trajectories under extreme electromagnetic transients, the MPSD group could reconstruct how rigid the atomic bonds are at large distances from the equilibrium arrangements. This promises new insights into the mechanical properties of matter and their instability near phase changes. [more]

2D materials generate HHG like atoms

February 16, 2018
Scientists from the MPSD’s theory department have shown that two-dimensional crystals can be used as an alternative to atoms and molecules to generate high-order harmonics. [more]

Magnetic responses in non-magnetic layers

February 12, 2018
Circularly polarized phonons produce a valley-dependent dynamic spin state as a result of strong spin-phonon coupling, which can be developed as a vehicle for quantum computation or spintronics applications. [more]
