Superconductivity without cooling

December 03, 2014
An infrared laser pulse briefly modifies the structure of a high-temperature superconductor and thus removes its electrical resistance even at room temperature. [more]

Professor R.J. Dwayne Miller receives prestigious ACS-Award

October 02, 2014
R. J. Dwayne Miller will be awarded the 2015 E. Bright Wilson Award for Spectroscopy from the American Chemical Society “for the development of femtosecond electron diffraction and coherent spectroscopic methods for the direct observation and control of chemical dynamics at the atomic level.” His work has created a new field in which all researchers can aspire to directly observe atomic motions during the defining moments of chemistry. Manipulating magnetic forces with light

August 06, 2014
The magnetic forces in materials like iron can be rapidly manipulated with light. This has been demonstrated theoretically by Johan Mentink and Martin Eckstein from the University of Hamburg at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) and the MPI for Structure and Dynamics of Matter in a publication in Physical Review Letters. Rapid and effective manipulation of magnetic states is of immense fundamental and technological value. For example, it could be used for the production of faster hard disks. [more]
