19 PhD places on offer for ambitious ultrafast science students in IMPRS-UFAST

September 16, 2021

Nineteen PhD positions in ultrafast science are waiting to be filled by top-level students at the International Max Planck Research School for Ultrafast Imaging IMPRS-UFAST. The graduate school has now launched this year’s call for applications to its outstanding structured PhD program, located at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) in Hamburg, northern Germany.

The IMPRS-UFAST concentrates on the theoretical and experimental aspects of condensed matter, accelerator-based light-sources, coherent imaging, molecular imaging and atomically resolved dynamics as well as ultrafast optics and X-ray science. Its 19 interdisciplinary research projects for 2022 cover a broad research spectrum, including terahertz generation and acceleration, the cavity engineering of 2D twisted materials, polaritonic chemistry, several spectroscopy methods, ab-initio nanoplasmonics and light shaping and other pioneering topics.

Students not only use some of the world’s best electron and X-ray sources but are also trained in a wide range of scientific and transferable subjects to give their scientific careers the best possible start. They are supervised by more than 30 leading scientists from the IMPRS UFAST partners: the MPSD, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the European XFEL and the Universität Hamburg.

The School is located at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) in Hamburg, on the city's expanding Science Campus. This vibrant research environment encourages scientific exchange and collaboration amongst researchers of all career.

Coordinator Neda Lotfiomran says: “The IMPRS-UFAST is a great opportunity for motivated young graduate students worldwide who have an excellent academic background and look forward to exciting challenges in the academic world during their PhD studies. Besides a fruitful and beneficial curriculum, our structured PhD program enables the admitted students to work with powerful fourth generation light sources and internationally renowned scientists from four world-class institutions in Hamburg, the excellence clusters and other graduate schools on the Bahrenfeld campus. We look forward to receiving your application!"

The IMPRS UFAST call is now open. You can apply for a place on this exciting international program until 15 November 2021 by clicking on the application link. Please ensure you follow the step-by-step guidelines for the application process in every detail.
