Profile of the Institute
The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) investigates dynamical phenomena within matter down to the elementary timescales of atomic and electronic motions, the femtosecond or attosecond timescale. The focus is on the use of short wavelength ultrafast probes, such as X-rays or electron pulses, which are capable of measuring atomic and electronic structures in matter of all kinds.
At present, the institute is mainly active in the following fields of research:
- Condensed matter physics, with a focus on the study of cooperative phenomena, collective excitations and on the quantum control of complex solids.
- Chemistry, with a focus on the study of the dynamics of small and large molecules as they carry out physical, chemical and biological function.
The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) was officially founded on January 1, 2014 with the Condensed Matter Dynamics Department of Andrea Cavalleri, and the Atomically Resolved Dynamics Department of R. J. Dwayne Miller. On November 1, 2014, the Institute added the Theory Department of Angel Rubio. In the future, the institute will host up to five divisions and several research groups.
Currently, the MPSD is located in the CFEL building on the science campus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. In the coming years, the institute will expand with a new building next to the CFEL building, scheduled to be ready for occupancy by 2020.
