Abstract:
In this mini-course, you will hear three lectures from experienced scientists. Afterwards, there will be time for you to ask questions and discuss with them.
H. Bretscher: What does “good science” mean to you? I will discuss the values and norms at the heart of scientific practice—where they come from, how they have changed over time, and how they interact with today’s incentive structures and funding models. I will reflect on their impact on scientific knowledge and trust, and highlight reproducibility and replication as key principles of contemporary research—asking what role each of us plays in shaping credible and sustainable science.
H. Fangohr: Reproducibility in Science – Ambition and Pragmatism: What is reproducibility, why does it matter, and (why) is it hard to achieve? I will outline the key requirements for reproducibility and show how they relate to practical steps we can take to make our research more reproducible and re-usable. Along the way, we will explore tools and services that can help us weave reproducibility into everyday research practice, including Git, Zenodo, Edmond, and Jupyter Notebooks.
C. Putzke: Whether you are starting your PhD or finishing it, you will face the challenge of handing over data and information. I will showcase how our group builds a long-term memory of research work and data, enhancing reproducibility and enabling the adoption of best practices.
