Magnons are quantized collective spin-wave excitation in ordered magnets. The field of magnonics seeks to understand, control, and manipulate them with the long-term perspective of energy-efficient applications. In this talk I will introduce how magnons can be controlled with electronic spin currents. Examples include long-distance transport of magnon spin currents through both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets.
I will also introduce antimagnons, i.e., out-of-equilibrium negative-energy spin-wave excitations, that in many ways act as the antiparticle of the magnon and may be used in superradiant magnon amplification and lasing schemes.
I am a full professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Utrecht University on the chair "Theory of Nanoscale Systems", and part-time professor (in Dutch: "deeltijdhoogleraar") on the chair "Theory for Spin-based Nanoelectronics" at Eindhoven
University of Technology, in the group Physics of Nanostructures. My current research is focused mostly on spintronics: the research discipline concerned with exploiting the spin degree of freedom of the electron in applications. Spintronics combines efforts of materials nanoscience, nano-electronics, and condensed-matter physics. My expertise is in theoretical condensed-matter physics.
R.A. (Rembert) Duine will be at MPSD 1 day from Monday midday (3.08.2026) to Tuesday midday(4.06. 2026). To schedule a meeting, please feel free to contact Alexandra Kather.
