In recent years, a number of different experimental platforms became available, where the physics of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) can be studied in a yet unexplored regime. Material engineering allows namely to confine both electrons and photons such that their coupling becomes strong, realising a non-vacuum, non-relativistic version of QED. Besides the technological prospects for quantum-light-based control of materials as well as quantum non-linear optics, these systems are expected to show novel types of many-body phenomena arising from the strong coupling between photons and electrons. In this talk, I will focus on pairing phenomena peculiar to this novel regime of QED within materials. One the one hand, electron pairing and the resulting superconductivity mediated by cavity photons, and on the other hand on photon pairing mediated by the gapless excitations of a medium with a sharp Fermi surface.
