The claim that “we just hire the best people” is heard often in universities and research institutes across the world. If this claim is true, why do the demographics of the academy not mirror the societies that it claims to serve? Are universities, which have long been hierarchical organizations, destined to be centers of inequality? For many women, that is precisely their experience. The same can be said for many scholars from ethnic minorities, or from the LGBT+ community, or who are disabled.

Note: The keynote talk is open for all scientists, equal opportunity enthusiasts, and everyone else who is interested to learn more about the interlinked challenges of research assessment reform and dismantling structural barriers to equality.
