Visiting the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter

The Institute is located in the MPSD and the CFEL buildings in the Science City Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, Germany:

Please note: The MPSD and CFEL buildings are close to the side entrance but this entrance is open for motorists only from Monday till Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closed on weekends. It is open for pedestrians and cyclist at all times. They only have to ring a bell and the door will be opened by the the main gate staff.

How to reach the side entrance
If you arrive by plane and use the S-Bahn (rapid-transit railway) line S1 to Altona or if you arrive by train directly at the Hamburg Altona train station, you can continue with bus line M2 (direction Schenefeld, Achterndiek oder Schenefelder Platz) to bus stop Luruper Chaussee (DESY) (11 bus stops).

How to reach the main entrance
If you arrive by plane or train and use the S-Bahn line S1 or S11 to Othmarschen, you can continue with bus line M1 (direction Rissen, Schenefelder Holt or S Blankenese) to bus station Zum Hünengrab (DESY) (5 bus stops).

By train
Take the train to the Hamburg Altona station. From there you have the following options available:

1. Continue by taxi, traveling time approx. 15–20 min.
2. Continue by bus line M2 (direction Schenefeld, Achterndiek or Schenefelder Platz) directly to the side entrance of DESY (bus stop Luruper Chaussee (DESY)) (11 bus stops), traveling time approx. 15–20 min.
3. Continue by bus line M1 (direction Rissen, Schenefelder Holt or S Blankenese) to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab (DESY)) (15 bus stops), traveling time approx. 25 min.
4. Continue by S-Bahn line S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese or Wedel) to station Othmarschen. Then take the bus line M1 (direction Rissen, Schenefelder Holt or S Blankenese) to bus stop Zum Hünengrab (DESY) (5 bus stops), total traveling time approx. 20 min.

If the train only stops at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (central station), continue with S-Bahn line S1, S2, S3, S11, S21, or S31 (westbound) to Altona and follow the instructions above.

By plane
After arriving at Hamburg airport Fuhlsbüttel, the following options are available:

1. Continue by taxi, traveling time approx. 40–50 min.
2. Continue with S-Bahn line S1 (direction Blankenese or Wedel) to station Altona. Then go on with bus line M2 (direction Schenefeld, Achterndiek or Schenefelder Platz) directly to the side entrance of DESY (bus stop Luruper Chaussee (DESY)) (11 bus stops), traveling time approx. 65 min.

By car
Normally, you exit the Autobahn (A7) at the Bahrenfeld exit. However, since there is currently a lot of major roadwork being done, you may need to use the Othmarschen or Volkspark exits instead.

Use the DESY campus map upon your arrival to the campus (walking distance from main gate to the MPSD and the CFEL buildings is roughly one kilometer).
