NOMAD researchers visualize the behaviour of very different substances on the basis of quantum physical calculations. In the case of this gold cluster they thus make visible how much the particles change (left) due t o thermal motion in the course of more than 250 picoseconds (ps - one picosecond is the 1000th part of a billionth of a second). Here, the cluster assumes different structures (right). The illustration below reflects how many atoms bond to a certain number of atoms at a certain time.
