The Max Planck-New York City Center on Non-Equilibrium Quantum Phenomena was jointly established by the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg (MPSD), the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz (MPIP), the Columbia University, and the Center for Computational Quantum Physics at the Flatiron Institute. The Center officially inaugurated its operations on November 18, 2019, at Columbia University, USA.

The Max Planck – New York City Center on Non-equilibrium Quantum Phenomena succesfully unites and exploits the complementary strengths of research groups located at two Max Planck Institutes: MPSD, Hamburg and MPIP, Mainz, and two New York City institutions: Columbia University and the Flatiron Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ).

The partners are joining forces to advance one of the most vibrant and exciting areas of research in the physical sciences: control of non-equilibrium quantum phenomena in complex materials. We especially focus on applications of non-linear light-matter coupling that result in phases with no equilibrium counterparts.

The Center has brought together a unique combination of capabilities, including advanced experimental techniques in optical and x-ray science, new types of ultrafast microscopies, innovative materials synthesis, heterostructure fabrication and cutting-edge theoretical and computational methods. The Center complements and broadens the scientific work at the partner Max Planck Institutes in terms of research themes and infrastructure.

Research collaboration among teams are transcend institutional and geographic boundaries. Joint research positions and long-term visitors and exchange programs have been proven to further strengthen the close collaboration among the involved institutions.
Our goals are to become a world leader in these areas of science and to establish a new blueprint for international collaboration.
